Higher Caffeine in Light or Dark Roast?

First off, Robusta beans have higher caffeine than Arabica beans. We use Arabica because they are the more flavorful beans.Higher Caffeine?

All coffee beans have water content in them. When your roast them, the water content reduces the longer you roast them. This effects the beans size and weight. Some will say the roasting process burns off the caffeine. I’m not a chemist, but I can speak from experience when I say that the lighter the roast the higher the coffee buzz. Also, the way you process the coffee has an effect. Espresso is a fast extraction process; the water spends less time with the beans. Drip is slow and the water sits with the beans longer. French press is even slower. The slower the brew increases the potential for higher caffeine.

You can save a lot of money by owning our own espresso machine and buying our own beans. There are a variety of machines out there a person can buy. We recommend buying a cheaper one to see if you are the type of person that will commit to using the machine before investing in a “good” machine. No point investing in a high quality machine if you never use it! If you buy a cheap one and you realize you’re using it a lot, you’ll end up wanting a BETTER one when the cheap one dies. And it will die, because it’s CHEAP!

FYI: Some coffee shops add caffeine to their coffees. This gives the illusion there’s more caffeine in their darker roast coffee. Some add or use Robusta beans for their espresso roasts which will increase the caffeine too.

How to Create Great Tasting Coffee

In the beginning:

  1. Start with fresh coffee beans.  Coffee beans tend to have the best flavor and aroma 24 hours to 10 days after they have been roasted.  As they age, the oil in the beans begin to turn rancid and the coffee flavor turns increasingly bitter.
  2. Grind your beans right before you use them. Ground coffee loses flavor and aroma very fast once its ground.
  3. Use water from a good source (bottled, filtered, or good tasting tap water). Good tasting water will enhance the flavor of your coffee.
  4. Select your favorite brewing method.

Grand Opening!!!

Our store is officially online today, the day after Thanksgiving, 2009. We are very excited about this move.

Feed back has been extremely positive about our coffee. People love Cold Creek Coffee! For people that really know us, opening a coffee business seems fitting for us. For people that see Jon as a construction contractor and me as an ex-clothing store manager, ex-government employee turned Realtor, may have trouble wrapping their heads around the idea that we started a coffee business until they taste our coffee!!!

At this time our business plan only includes Shipping to Customers located in Oregon and WashingtonContinue Reading »

The Name…

Cold CreekBirthing the name Cold Creek Coffee Company was a labor intense process. First off, there are SO many coffee businesses already out there, especially in the Pacific NW!

We needed to check trademarks, registered business names and website domain names for availability. We would think of a name we both liked only to find out someone bought the domain name or had the business name registered or it was trademarked. What was most frustrating was the fact that the domain names that were already purchased and if you wanted them,…   Continue Reading »
